In response to review by James Dotle 2/3/09 Please note that our sandwiches are priced at £3.95 for normal sliced bread and £4.50 for a ciabatta roll. The crisps and salad are a garnish only. We regret to hear that your visit was unsatisfactory and that you felt you had not been given value for money. We endeavour to provide good quality meals at our establishment and appreciate feedback, although it is easier to resolve these issues face to face on the day. We price our meals according to cost of ingredients and competition. Consequently, we feel our pricing structure is justified and have recieved no further complaints about portion sizes.

I visited the Red Lion Inn with my fiancee, my brother and his partner who were visiting the peaks and I suggested Birchover as a nice place to stop off on their way back down south. We each ordered sandwiches and received a sandwich plus a pinch of lettuce, a cherry tomato each and 3 crisps each. I think this amounted to around £16.00 or £17.00. If you are going to give customers some salad then give them some salad and if you are going to give them some crisps then give them some crisps - between us it amounted to about half a pack. When you pay 4.50 for a sandwich you do expect a decent meal and I'm afraid this wasn't. Frankly, I felt embarrassed having suggested this establishment to my brother; if paying a little more money and getting a decent meal is what is required at another establishment then I would be happy to do that, at least i would walk out feeling like I had been served with what I had paid for.

Good food, reasonably priced, well cooked and interesting choices. We had the farmhouse pie - at £7.50 for a very wholesome real pie in a dish with veg, excellent value. For midweek evening, this pub was encouragingly busy and had good atmosphere. Good range of beer [mainly Theakstons. If you are in West Derbyshire, worth a detour to this place - don't confuse with the Druid Inn down the road which has gone "designer" and pricey.
