My husband took me here for a Valentines dinner. He had phoned before hand to discuss the menu and general theme of the evening. A fixed 3 course dinner with a glass of fizz on arrival. So far so good! As soon as we arrived we felt like we had been transported into a farce with a double act of scary headmistress meets worst mother in law - 'Bossy & Stroppy". The evening was clearly not going to be the lovely relaxed romantic dinner we were hoping. So, on to the food and service. Freezing cold dinning room and a waitress who couldn't serve us drinks because of her age - very Tesco's! The service was brisling and you soon felt like you were to be in and out quick. I had pate to start which was OK but rather surprised at the mean portion of shop bought sliced wholemeal. The pork belly and dauphinoise main was fabulous, melt in the mouth but why a side dish of unseasonal veg? Pudding OK blah blah. Oh but the wine! There was no wine list, it was all in Stroppy or was that Bossy's head and no prices. I don't know about you but I like to peruse a wine list and as it was not part of the fixed price meal I couldn't understand why we were not allowed choice and I don't like being dictated to either. So we gambled on a Shiraz which was a brand you can find in your local Spar!!!! Extraordinary! So in the 'Come dine with me' way I give this evening a 2.

A stylist 21st century gastro-pub miles ahead of the rubbish in Bickleigh itself. Local food prominent on the menus, - including the excellent wines from nearby Yearlstone vineyard This is the pub to go to if you care about regional and seasonal foods cooked with skill in a stylish setting. A couple of miles off the main A-road but well worth the effort.
