This is a lovely hotel. The interior decor and furnishings are excellent.
The restaurant is a disaster. We went for Sunday lunch and were the only two people in the restaurant!! The starters, prawn cokctail and tomato and basil soup were acceptable. Our main course choices were roast beef and salmon.
Both came as plated dishes and we were told this is how it always is - dinner included. The beef was a thick unhealthy looking slice (re-heated?) and there were several dollops of over cooked vegetables. The salmon was not well cooked and came with new potatoes and peas in quantities well beyond the desirable.
We had no more and left, most dissatisfied. What a shame. We won't be going again.
This was my wife's birthday treat!

Stunning! Grafton House has to have one of the finest city views, not just in the UK but in the world, framing Durham Cathedral and Castle in the windows of the Dining Room and front bedrooms. If you can bring yourself to look away from the breathtaking view, you'll find the interior elegant and comfortable. We arrived shortly after the hotel had opened for the first time. The welcome was warm, thoughtful and professional, and the breakfast fresh and enjoyable. Highly recommended.
