Just been to The Dovecote tonight and what a brilliant meal we have had. Michael and Hilary have really turned the pub around. Could not fault the service or the food it was lovely to have such friendly and efficient service. Well done and you will see us again.

VERY POOR. We went to the dovecoat for a family birthday, and had what can only be described as a disaster. We tried to book a table at lunch time only to be told by the manager ( or so we Beleive as he is the only one over the age of 20) that there was no need. I said given there was. 7 of us including a 2 year old was he sure, yes he said we won't be that busy at 6 on a Sunday. We arrived at 5.50 and low and behold no tables big enough downstairs for 7! I asked one of the staff but they we not very helpful. We went upstairs but could not stand how hot and dark it was. I went downstairs and spoke to the manger who I reminded I asked to reserve a table to which he said we don't reserve tables (we later saw the menus which advises you to reserve a table if you are a big party!). He did get some of the staff to push 3 tables together so we could eat downstairs. After deciding on the food I went to order it with my son who'es birthday it was and his scampi was ordered first. After completing the order I asked to put it in on a tab to be told they don't do tabs. Warning bells should have sounded when the manager came out and told the lad serving us that he had cocked up the last order in front of us and others. We then waited over an hour for the food, we had not been advised of any wait, by the way we had a 2 year old (who fell asleep waiting and went to bed without any food) a pregnant woman and a diabetic. When the food came it wa over cooked, peas like bullets, fried eggs so hard you could have used them as a frisbee and a rare steak so well done if was an insult. The table next to us were also complaining about the food so it seems a common theme. The final insult came when the scampi had been missed off the order! The manager came over and tried to make out he had taken the order and we had forgotten it until my son and I put him right and he apologised. Alex did get a free beer (he is 19 by the way!) and his food turned in 5 minutes (soggy scampi tasted terrible). I then decided to complain to which the manager said we usually give you free drinks (a bit late by now). I get be feeling this is a common occurance and we have left it with him to see what compensation he comes up with. I just hope it's not a free meal in the dovecoat!! Good luck if you decide to go for a meal, best stick to pop and crisps.
