Good Points: Rooms spacious well equipped, dinner excellent, breakfast good, Bad Points: Staff at breakfast leaving used plates stock piling on table. General review: this is our second stay at the hotel, once again thoroughly enjoyed, will return again.

I am writing on behalf of myself and Mr van Nierop. We are both angry and completely dissatisfied with the sevice,or should I say lack of service we received and the general standard and upkeep of the hotel.I work in the hospitality business. We were attending the Paterson wedding. We telephoned several days before to inquire about an early check in. We needed to relax and cahange before the wedding at 15.30. This was confirmed by the hotel. We arrived at 11.00 after a long flight and were informed in an abrupt and unfriendly manner by the front desk supervisor that the room was not available until 15.00.At all times Mr van Nierop and myself were polite and non confrontational. We explained the wedding plans but to no avail. She told us we could change in the toilets. We asked for another room. Begrudgingly, she sent us downstairs with keys that did not work.On arrival it seemed the room was next to an aerobic studio..or rave...as there was music blasting down the corridor. As the purpose was to relax we returned to the desk only to overhear the supervisor complaining about us to a colleague. Not wanting any more unpleasantness and feeling very tired we decided to opt for the original proposition of a 15.00 check in. Through all of this the supervisor was unfriendly and rude. At the intervention of Mr Paterson who had already allocated certain rooms, in cooperation with the hotel, to guests arriving from abroard we were given room 22.A double bed, but at this stage we would accept anything. Before going to the room we sat on the terrace next to the bar. It was filthy...covered in cigarette stubs..most of the chairs broken..Room 22. The temp. outside was top 20's and the radiator and marble floor heating were full on. Several calls to remedy this were unsuccessful. 1 coat hanger in wardrobe. Hairs in the bed. Because the heating was full on we had to sleep with the windows open. Mistake! The room was next to some external fan that made a dreadful noise all night and there was a radio or television playing through the night from an admin. room below us. Below our window hotel staff congregated to smoke and the smell came up straight through our open windows. The shower in the bathroom hardly functioned. I could go on, but perhaps this is enough of an indication of the dreadful and unacceptable standards at the hotel. I travel throughout the world and stay in a variety of residences. It is a long time since I have witnessed such low standards..considering the price.. and rude staff.Th eonly acceptable behaviour from hotel staff came from waitresses who came from Latvia or Estonia..maybe these were from the wedding caterers. Somehow there bears little resemblance between the standards one clearly perceives from the web sight and what one actually experiences first hand. I shall certainly make my feelings clear to colleagues in the business. Andrew Wright/Willibrord van Nierop
