22nd of January - St Vincents Day

22nd of January is the 22nd day of the year

St Vincents Day:
As the patron saint of vintners, wine growers, vinegar producers, roofers and alcoholics, maybe there is an attraction for the British in this otherwise completely Spanish saint of the 3rd century – he was certainly popular with the Anglo-Saxons. Vincent was born in Huesca but worked as Deacon of Zaragoza. Here he and his bishop were tried for their faith. The bishop was exiled; Vincent suffered agonies and eventual death: roasted on a gridiron, his flesh ripped with hot hooks, and thrown onto shards of pottery in his cell. The martyr’s constancy converted his gaoler, and Vincent was allowed to die with dignity. Like St Swithin’s Day in July, St Vincent’s Day became associated with predicting the weather, in the latter case for the rest of the year.
