3rd of March - St Winwaloes Day

3rd of March is the 62nd day of the year

St Winwaloes Day:
Winwaloe (alternatively Winwallus, Winneral and many other variants), who was born, lived and died in Brittany, was a saint for reasons not quite clear somewhat beloved of the British in medieval days. There are several possible explanations for the high regard in which he was held. Firstly his parents were nobles who had fled to Brittany during an outbreak of plague in their homeland, or possibly escaping Saxon invaders, from Cornwall, that county containing several churches dedicated to him. Secondly he founded a monastery after the recently deceased St Patrick, dear to the Irish, but also of note in the British mainland, came to him in a vision. And thirdly, the most fascinating theory, his reputation as one of the so-called phallic saints, associated with fertility, may have been attractive to our forebears.
