25th of December - Christmas Day

25th of December is the 359th day of the year

Christmas Day:
Christmas Day is of course not what it used to be, and never really was. Our ways of celebrating the great milestones of the year have changed as technology and economic circumstances have developed, and the way we imagine our forebears marking the day – massive geese, plum pudding, bottles of port and porter and a whole Stilton cheeses on the table, a roaring fire inside and snow outside – for the vast majority was always a myth. This day as a religious festival marks the birth of Christ, and whatever our beliefs or lack of them it is good to ponder for a short time the moral messages of the Christian faith. In spite of cynicism about the egregious commercialism of contemporary Christmas, for many of us it remains a special family time: the dinner an act of devotion and the day replete with customs – paper hats and awful jokes from crackers, the menu itself, falling asleep during the Queen’s speech, complaining about the telly... Our lives would be poorer without it, though our pockets would be richer.
