The Redsand Forts were built in 1942 for anti-aircraft defence in the Thames Estuary. There are seven forts, originally with interconnected steel platforms; six forts with mounted guns arranged in a semicircle around the control centre with one being used as a searchlight tower.

During WW2 the forts guns shot down many aircraft and flying bombs. In the late 1950s the MoD decommissioned the site.

In the 1960s various forts were re-occupied and used as pirate radio stations. Since then it appears the Forts have been unused and lying idle.

The boat trips are run by Marine A Services with their tugboat, X-Pilot, which is licensed to carry a maximum of twelve passengers. Departure time is 10.30am unless otherwise stated. Unfortunately, it is not possible for passengers to go aboard the Forts due to their current condition.
