Four miles to the west of Cromer along the scenic A149 North Norfolk coast road lies Sheringham. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book, but Sheringham is largely a creation of the 19th century. One of its greatest glories is the Regency Sheringham Hall, whose gardens were designed in 1812 by Humphry Repton. They are particularly famed for the rhododendrons and azaleas in the extensive woodland garden, and for breathtaking views to the coast. Sheringham burgeoned after the arrival of the railway in 1887, allowing those wishing to indulge in sea-bathing to get in, and the fruits of the sea – in particular whelks, lobsters and crabs destined for London – to get out. The shingle beach is still a draw to bathers (and at low tide adds a sandy margin), some of them lucky enough to enjoy the traditional beach huts in their brilliant colours. There is no harbour here, so the few remaining fishing boats, like the lifeboat, have to be launched from the beach. The modern railway still serves Sheringham, the terminus of the quaintly named Bittern line from Norwich, taking in some other beautiful coastal stations on the way. In addition there are steam trains here run by the North Norfolk Railway Company. Two churches in Sheringham illustrate the history of the town. All Saints in Upper Sheringham dates from the 14th century. Here you can see a carved mermaid on the pew nearest the entrance, local legend having it she visited the church and defied the beadle to attend a service (there are mermaids on the town’s coat of arms to recall this too). And the Victorian St Peter’s, built on land donated by local squires the Upchers (the family that also built Sheringham Hall. Sheringham’s centre possesses a strange clock tower, erected in 1862, that was once a reservoir for drinking water. There is some interesting Dutch gabling too, but most noticeable in architectural terms is the use of flint throughout the town, some of it in traditional style, some in more idiosyncratic ways.
