Brentwood is the principal town in the Borough of Brentwood, in south west Essex. It is a London commuter town, approximately 20 miles from central London. The Borough of Brentwood includes a number of parishes which vary in size, comprising attractive villages and landscapes with many important and historic buildings. Within the Borough as a whole there are 510 buildings listed for their historical and architectural importance. The Borough has a population of around 70,000. The main shopping area is Brentwood Town Centre, which boasts many of the big High Street chains. The Town Centre is an historic centre with three designated Conservation Areas, incorporating several listed Buildings and an Ancient Monument - the St Thomas a Becket Chapel. Brentwood or "Burnt wood" came to be a resting place for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury, travelling the Roman road running from Colchester into London. One local village is called Pilgrims Hatch. In 1221 a small chapel dedicated to St Thomas Becket was built for the pilgrims. The ruin stands in the centre of the High Street, next to the tourist information office. The Brentwood Theatre and The Hermit are the main cultural buildings in Brentwood; along with the Brentwood International Hall. Brentwood has King George's Field and two vast country parks at South Weald and Thorndon. Weald Country Park has been chosen to hold the 2012 Olympics mountain bike race. Brentwood is home to Brentwood Town F.C., who play at the Brentwood Centre. Brentwood became the manufacturing centre of trampolining in the UK and still has a thriving trampolining community, but no longer a local factory. The headquarters of Amstrad are located in Brentwood, Brentwood does not have a railway station in its town centre because it is situated on a hill. Brentwood railway station is located to the south of the town Essex Tourism - 0871 716 2199 Calls cost less than 10p per minute
