Charmouth is a picturesque seaside village about two miles east along the southern Dorset coast from Lyme Regis. The village is part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The beach is formed from Lower Jurassic clay which is full of fossils which regularly wash out into the sands on the beach which makes Charmouth a popular destination for fossil hunters. Charmouth featured prominently during the development of the 'new sciences' of Geology and Palaeontology two centuries ago. The village itself is fairly unique, being a medieval planned community. 'Monk's Wall' to the north and an earthen embankment to the south formed the original boundaries of the Village. Evidence of Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements exist in the area, but the Iron Age people, the Durotriges, left the greater mark with their impressive hill forts. Today Charmouth features lime rendered cottages and buildings ranging from the late medieval through to regency villas and late Victorian residences. Visitors to Charmouth can stay at the Hensleigh Hotel, a delightful family run hotel close to the sea. One visitor from the past, Jane Austen, described the village mentioning its 'sweet retired bay' and calling it 'the happiest spot for watching the flow of the tide'.
