In a hitherto undiscovered part of North Devon can be found the quiet little village of Umberleigh. On the side of the river Taw, the village is set around a fine example of a 3 arched bridge, a structure well worth a visit. From the top of the bridge stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Devon landscapes can be enjoyed. The banks of the river Taw offer beautiful riverside walks through what is known as Tarka country, and the scenery can also be enjoyed from a train from Umberleigh station travelling along the Tarka Line. Back to the river again to relax while trying to catch a fish or two. This village oozing quaint charm from a bygone age is not however out of touch with modern life. Stop off for a refreshing cuppa in the Gables Tea Rooms and check your Emails and browse the Internet courtesy of their WIFI access point. And if you enjoy military history, then a visit to the Cobbaton Combat Collection is a must. The museum houses over 50 vehicles and thousands of exhibits from the Boer to Gulf Wars. Oh and while you’re strolling through Umberleigh village, don’t forget to feed the ducks!
