Millions of motorists who have never actually been to the Cumbrian village of Tebay will nevertheless know the name, and may have stopped off at the service area just north of junction 38 of the M6. For once the service area does its local people proud: it was established by a local farming family, sells plenty of local produce, and consistently wins awards for its food and friendly service. Many of the village’s 1,000 inhabitants work or supply the area these days.
But there is much more to Tebay than the service area. Until the middle of the 18th century this was just a tiny settlement, with sheep farming in the Howgill Fells and along the Lune Valley the main source of income. Then in 1760 the building of a turnpike brought increased trade, and when the railway came in 1846 this went up another notch.
Transport has always had a place to play in the village life. The traditionally whitewashed Cross Keys Inn has been here for 500 years or more, for most of that time acting as a coaching inn to feed and water travellers heading for Carlisle and Lancaster. The inn is reputedly haunted by the ghost of the Tebay Witch, Mary Baynes, though that shouldn’t put travellers off enjoying its hospitality or accommodation, as thousands upon thousands have done for half a millennium.
The village itself is a straggling one, following the A685 and B6260 that run through it, as does the River Lune, famed here for game fishing, and as pretty a spot to drop a line in the water as you could find anywhere, the gorge offering a delightful contrast to the equally scenic Howgills.
