With its wide range of shops and busy market, Chester-le-Street town centre
has been one of County Durham's most popular shopping venues for many years.
The Council is currently implementing visionary plans to further develop the
town centre, especially the main shopping and market area. Other plans in
the "Civic Heart" project include a heritage trail and a community woodland
initiative.
Despite all the developments taking place, the town centre has been
designated as conservation area which means that alterations and the new
developments would be required to reflect the original character of the
area.
