Formerly Seaham Harbour, Seaham is a small town on the North Sea coastline of County Durham in north east England. Twinned with the German town of Gerlingen, situated thirteen miles east of the city of Durham and six miles south of Sunderland with which it has historic ties. A small farming community until the early nineteenth century, the harbour was built in 1828 by the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry who bought the estate from the Milbankes, whose daughter Anne Isabella Milbanke was married for a short time to Lord Byron. Built to aid the transport of goods from local industries it proved inadequate for the tonnage of coal being mined from nearby collieries so It was the 6th Marquess who commissioned engineers to reclaim the land, extend and deepen the dock, officially opening in 1905. Seaham grew in the 1920’s when the main collieries opened but by the 1990’s, a number of mine-related deaths finally caused the last of the collieries to be closed, a process which caused irreparable damage to the local economy, from which it has struggled to recover. During the early part of this century however, Seaham was completely regenerated. Offering some of the best beaches in the country, these were fully restored and designated in 2001 as a ‘heritage coast’. In 2002 Seaham won the Outstanding Achievement in Regeneration Award in the Turning The Tide project jointly with the Eden Project.
