Horseheath is a hamlet in Cambridgeshire, situated a few miles south-east of Cambridge, between Linton and Haverhill. Horseheath has several old buildings, most notably its 600 year old Norman church which has a 16th century sundial, a 500 year old font, and treasured brasses and monuments of the lords and ladies of its grand past. The Alingtons were the Lords of the Manor here, and they thrived under the Stuarts and had the privilege of handing to the King his first drink at coronations. The Alingtons lived at Horseheath Hall. The house was rebuilt in 1663-5 by architect Sir Roger Pratt, but was pulled down in 1777. The splendid wrought-iron gates went to St John's College and Trinity College, Cambridge, and the rectory at Cheveley. Linton Zoo is close by where there is a wealth of rare and exotic creatures to see including tigers, lions, tapirs, giant tortoises and tarantulas. It’s set in 18 acres of gardens with picnic areas and a children's play area. Horseheath is close to the historic market town of Saffron Walden and the palacial house and gardens of Audley End House. It is also just 20 minutes drive from Newmarket, the capital of racehorse training.
