Drumnadrochit is a village in the Highlands of Scotland, situated on the River Enrick in the Great Glen at the head of Urquhart Bay, the largest bay of Loch Ness. Drumnadrochit lies on the west shore of Loch Ness, famous as the home of ‘Nessie’ the Loch Ness Monster, St. Columba reported the first sighting of the ‘water-beast’ in the 6th century. Archaeological sites suggest the area has been inhabited by ancient settlements with the well-preserved Clava Cairn at Corrimony near Crannich. Drumnadrochit is a popular tourist destination and a central location for the Loch Ness Monster Industry. There are two visitor centres for the Loch Ness Monster in the village, with exhibitions and monster-spotting boat-cruises. Another attraction is Urquhart Castle the early 17th Century tower stands at the south end of the bay, one mile east of Drumnadrochit. The castle is maintained by Historic Scotland and stands overlooking Loch Ness with views over the Loch and along the Great Glen to Inverness in the north-east. Drumnadrochit has a village green, cafes, Drum Farm gift shop and tea room, a hotel, an oatcake bakery, post office and shop. The village is on the route of the ‘Great Glen Way’ the long distance footpath from Fort William to Inverness.
