Braemar is a historic village in upper Deeside, west Aberdeenshire in Scotland situated 50 miles north of Perth and 60 miles west of Aberdeen. Robert Louis Stevenson is said to have written his famous novel ‘Treasure Island’ whilst staying in Braemar in1881. Braemar dates back to the reign of Malcolm III (1057-1093) with the remains of Kindrochit Castle lying on the east bank of the Clunie Water. Known as the eastern gateway to the Cairngorms, Braemar is surrounded by magnificent mountains, designated National scenic areas and abundant with Scottish wildlife; it has been a popular Highland tourist resort since 1852 when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bought the Balmoral Estate nearby. Braemar is particularly popular for winter-sports and bus-tours; there are hotels and holiday accommodation, hostels and a camping and caravan-park, a variety of shops, award winning bistros, coffee-shops and restaurants. The famous Braemar Gathering is held each September; it is one of Scotland’s biggest Highland Games with traditional games, pipers, dancers and usually a Royal guest. There is an 18-hole golf course, walking in the mountains of Royal Deeside and climbing on Mount Morrone or the more challenging Lochnagar. Other attractions include Braemar Castle dating from1628, The Highland Heritage Centre with its tartan shop the Glenshee Snow-sport School and Ski Centre, Braemar Highland Safari tours and the Cairngorms National Park.
