Talybont-on-Usk is to be found in the Central Brecon Beacons with the Brecon and Monmouth canals and the River Usk running through it. In an area of such outstanding natural beauty the visitor can easily be seduced by the variety of attractions on offer from local walks and rambles through the surrounding countryside, the more energetic taking to their mountain bikes whilst those who prefer a bird watching or fishing, boating or canoeing are equally well catered for. Just to the east of the town is the largest natural lake in South Wales – Llangorse Lake offers a variety of activities from fishing to sailing. Talybont-on-Usk also has an important historic past, the Brinmore Tramroad runs some 8 miles from here to Trefil and during the 19th century linked the Tredegar Ironworks and Trefil Limestone quarries to the Monmouth and Brecon Canal at Talybont. The route passed through the dramatic and picturesque valleys of Talybont and Dyffryn Crawnon and today is a much enjoyed public footpath offering an insight into the industrial heritage of the area as well as providing an excellent opportunity to enjoy the local wildlife. At the head of the Talybont-on-Usk Valley, just above the reservoir, you can find the Blaen-y-Glyn waterfalls with some splendid walks up the ridges to the peaks of the Brecon Beacons. Today the town is a thriving farming and tourist centre which still has its market days on Tuesdays and Fridays and it is easily understandable why this is such a popular tourist location.
