Port Talbot is on the M5 between Cardiff and Swansea - junctions 38 – 41 all lead into the town. Port Talbot is not often considered to be a lovely town as dominating the skyline are the steelworks’ industrial chimneys and clouds of smoky steam often billow over the area. Visitors often rush through on their way elsewhere, but as so often, appearances can be deceptive. Take a little time to explore the town itself and the surrounding areas - the town is built along the eastern rim of Swansea Bay and families enjoy exploring the beach at Aberavon sands. To the north you can head up the through the Afan valley to the Afan forest park; 11,000 hectares of walks and world renowned cycle tracks (listed by aficionados as one of the world’s must do rides - right up there with the route through the USA’s Grand Canyon.) Also ,admire the sculpture trail. Created by local schoolchildren and ex- miners, this project is a testament to the valley’s history. Port Talbot itself has good shops and a thriving local market. Port Talbot is a reminder of South Wales’ proud industrial heritage but it is also so much more.
