Ramsey enjoys a happy reputation as the sunniest place in the Isle of Man, and its golden beaches, sheltered by the North Barrule mountainside, offer a scenic location for visitors hoping to work on their tans. Situated on the east coast, this is the main northern town, and its traditional seaside charm is accompanied by modern shopping. In the 1800s, Ramsey was a shipbuilding centre. Today it functions as a market town, although old traditions have survived: fishing vessels in the Irish sea frequently call at the harbour's repair and building yard, and round-the-island boat races are organised by the Ramsey-based Manx Sailing And Yachting Club. Fishing, too, remains central to the lifestyle with the annual week-long Ramsey Angling Festival an important fixture on the calendar. One much-loved feature of the harbour is its distinctive old swing bridge. Sadly, though, another relic of the town's seafront is falling into disrepair - campaigners are urgently lobbying for funds to restore and re-open Queen's Pier, a handsome Victorian iron structure that at one time welcomed landing steamers from all over the UK. Back on land, Albert Tower is the granite monument that symbolises Ramsey, built on the hilltop spot where Prince Albert looked down over the town and the northern plain in 1847. For families, there is plenty to do in and around Ramsey. The Rural Life Museum at Grove House affords a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Victorian farmers. Mooragh Park, ranged around a fabulous lake, provides boating, tennis, bowling, crazy golf and children's play, and the Venture Centre lays on archery, climbing, abseiling and an assault course. Slightly gentler pleasures include a steep walk through the woodlands, streams and waterfalls of Dhoon Glen, and a trip along stunning coastline on the Manx Electric Railway to Douglas or Snaefell.
