The market town of Ellesmere is located in North Shropshire and can trace its history back to Anglo Saxon times. The interesting mix of architecture in the town centre clearly demonstrates how popular Ellesmere has been through the ages, with evidence of Tudor, Georgian and Victorian buildings. The Llangollen Canal is close to the town centre and many a colourful canal boat can be seen from the banks as you take a stroll. The major attraction of Ellesmere though is undoubtedly its Mere, one of a series of nine in the area hence Ellesmere’s nickname as “Shropshire’s Lakeland”. It is around the mere that there is a visitor centre and from here the wildlife can easily be seen using the latest in CCTV technology. For those who appreciate quiet canalside walks or a meander around the Mere then Ellesmere is surely the place to visit as it offers a little oasis of tranquillity in an otherwise hectic world.
