Join the National Trust, British Heritage

Beyond the obvious fact that belonging to the National Trust means free entry to some of the best of England’s and Northern Ireland’s heritage sites, membership is a smart thing to organise for families who travel the country regularly.

The practical side of membership for the travelling family is attractive for all those who have listened to the “Are we there yet,” refrain for too long. Firstly there is almost bound to be an NT property or site near you wherever you are in the country. Secondly, they have good toilets! Thirdly many of them these days have playgrounds or at the very least wide open spaces where the kids can burn off energy, be amused, and hopefully be rendered tired enough to give the driver some peace.

Family membership is £77.50 at present, with lower rates for single-parent families, and big savings if payment is made by direct debit. The handbook sent to members is a brilliant guide to attractions, and the magazine provides some excellent ideas for outings and stop-offs.

Brit Quote:
The years between fifty and seventy are the hardest. You are always being asked to do things, and yet you are not decrepit enough to turn them down. - George Eliot
