Wellingborough, Travel Britain
Wellingborough is a town in Northamptonshire, situated some five miles south of Kettering. It is on the north side of the River Nene, with most of the old town nestled safely on the flanks of the hills above the river's flood plain.
The town dates back to Saxon times, it is mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Wendelburie, which roughly translates to 'the town of the people of Waendel'.
It was granted a market charter in 1201. In Elizabethan times the Lord of the Manor, Sir Christopher Hatton, was a sponsor of Sir Francis Drake's expeditions. This is why one of the ships was renamed The Golden Hind. Visitors to modern day Wellingborough can still visit The Hind Hotel.
Wellingborough grew into an attractive rural market town during the period from 1920-1950. In the 1950's it boasted four cinemas and several dance halls. There are no actual cinemas today but in the 1990's The Castle Theatre opened. This provides more than just a theatre, offering a flexible venue with many other features including Cinema, Drama Room, Restaurant and Art Gallery. Activities available in the area range from walking to motor sports, from theatre to historic houses.
