The small market town of Tenbury Wells is located on the southern bank of the River Teme, which forms the boundary between Worcestershire and Shropshire, close to the Herefordshire border. The river also feeds the nearby Burford House where it feeds the water gardens and pools that are rich in unusual moisture loving plants. Evidence of very settlement is scarce but the area was probably settled during the Iron Age; when St.Marys Church was being restored, following flood damage, in the mid-19th century the shaft of a 9th century Anglo Saxon Cross was found, the church tower is Norman in origin. In 1249 a charter granting the town, then called Temettebury, by Henry III to run a market, shortly after Roger de Cliford, who owned the market rights, built the Teme Bridge to connect Tenbury with Burford on the northern bank. He also laid out plots of land, called Burgage Plots along Tame Street letting them out to traders and local shopkeepers (the green strip of land Telford running parallel to the High Street is still called the Burgage). The bridge was rebuilt by Thomas Telford following flooding in 1795. There are several 17th century buildings in Tenbury but many are obscured by later Victorian facades. The "Wells" was added to the towns name in the mid-19th century after mineral water had been found in the 1840`s. In 1862 the Tenbury Spa was built, described as "Chinese Gothic" this amazing building has been restored to its former splendour. The Round Market, built by James Cranson, is another building of note, it was erected to enable the farmers wives to sell their dairy produce and poultry under cover and is still in use. Tenbury is still a busy market town with sheep & cattle sales twice a week and the Round Market in operation; every Tuesday at the end of November and beginning of December the well known English Mistletoe and Holly auctions are held or if you fancy a tipple, or need to stock up on apples for the winter, the annual Applefest is held at the end of October.
