North Uist is a small island in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland situated between Harris and Benbecula. Settlers on the island date back to the Neolithic era with the chambered cairn at Barpa Langass, which sits between Lochmaddy and Clachan and there are three bronze-age standing stones on the western slopes of Blashaval in the north-west of the island known as ‘Na Fir Bhreige’ or ‘the false men’. The island measures just 12 miles north to south and by 16 miles east to west, it is a popular tourist destination ideal for walking, climbing, nature-watching and fishing, including crab and lobster fishing. The north and west coasts have stretches of beautiful sandy bays and fertile farmland, the east coast is rocky, littered with seaweed and riddled with deep sea-lochs. The Principal village on the island is Lochmaddy with a hotel, the Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre and the ferry-port linking to Tarbet in Harris and Uig in Skye. Historically interesting features include the pre-reformation church of St Columba at Clachan sands and the ruins of the Teampull na Trionaid medieval monastery. Birdwatchers can enjoy the RSPB reserve at Balranaid and local boats are available for charter to explore the five Monach Isles National Nature Reserve used each autumn as breeding colonies for Atlantic grey seals
