Brae is a town on the Mainland island of Shetland in the Northern Isles of Scotland situated on a neck of land separating Sullom Voe from Busta Voe 22 miles north of Lerwick. During the 1800’s Brae developed as a crofting township, a road was built through the village and a weekly steamer service was in operation by 1894. By 1975 Shetland became the centre of the North Sea Oil boom and the vast Oil Terminal at Sullom Voe brought about the rapid expansion and development to Brae. Surrounded by rolling hills and picturesque scenery this rural settlement is a tranquil tourist destination ideal for nature-watching, sight seeing, fishing and walking, there are hotels, a selection of shops and amenities and the North Mainland Leisure Centre. Historically interesting features include the, believed to be haunted, upmarket Busta House Hotel originally built in 1588, extended to a three story mansion in 1714 by the laird Thomas Gifford. Nearby attractions include the large shallow Loch Spiggie RSPB Reserve; boat trips to Scotlands best preserved Broch - the island of Mousa and the Shetland Museum in neighbouring Lerwick The famous spectacular Viking fire festival the Up-Helly-Aa takes place in Lerwick harbour each January with the burning of a Viking galley, a torch-lit parade and all night partying.
