Whiteness is an ancient hamlet and parish on the Shetland mainland in Scotland situated on the west coast, 7 miles north of Lerwick and 3 miles north of Scalloway. The Shetland Isles were acquired by Scotland from Scandinavia in 1468 and the name ‘Whiteness’ comes from the old Norse meaning ‘white headland’ describing its position on the coastline which is indented with a sea loch or ‘voe’ which cuts deep into the land up to the heathery hills and green crofts. Surrounded by unspoilt picturesque landscapes, beautiful sandy beaches, archaeological sites and an abundance of wildlife, this idyllic rural village is ideal for angling, walking, bird-watching and sight-seeing. Historically interesting sites nearby include the Neolithic Staneydale ‘Temple’, chambered cairns and Iron Age brochs. Mousa Broch is Scotland’s best preserved broch dating back 2000 years; it is located on the island of Mousa which also has a RSPB reserve with regular organised boat trips. Scalloway Castle is a classic castle with a colourful and interesting history and the Shetland Museum and Archives, located in Lerwick, has exhibits and displays on the 5000 years of life on the islands. Also held in Lerwick is the mid-winter Viking fire festival the Up-Helly-Aa, this annual event includes burning a replica Viking long-boat and all-night partying.
