Ballygalley is a small village situated on the world-famous Antrim Coast Road. Nestling at the foot of green hills, the village looks out over a picturesque stone wall to the sandy beach, the bay, the vast waters of the Irish Sea and, on a clear day, Scotland. Ballygalley spreads out around a 17th Century castle, reputedly haunted, which has since been extended to become a four-star hotel. This is the only building of its age that's still occupied in Northern Ireland. Ballygalley Head, a roadside crag, is a village landmark and a favourite with climbers. Ballygalley is the ideal place for relaxation, although it also offers a range of activities from walking and riding to fishing, sailing and water sports. The wreck of an 1889 gunboat, SS Thrush, is a big attraction for divers, and golfers are welcome at the Cairndhu Golf Club or the smaller course at the nearby Carnfunnock Country Park. The park is filled with woodland walks, gardens and attractions for young and old alike, with awe-inspiring views over the sea. Three miles north of Larne, where the Antrim Coast Road starts its 23-mile journey, it's at Ballygalley that the magical scenery really begins to unfold.
