The delightful village of Bushmills is one of the essential tourist stops on the North Antrim Coast. A conservation village with almost a hundred listed buildings, it lies on the River Bush in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Bushmills is of course world-famous for its whiskey, which has been produced here for 400 years at Ireland's oldest working distillery. Visitors may tour the building and, afterwards, enjoy a sample of the celebrated tipple. Bushmills is also well-known for its salmon. Annually returning to the river from the Atlantic, they can be seen leaping above the water at the scenic Walkmill Falls. Other sights along the river include two authentically renovated mills. Bushmills has a long tradition of folk music, enjoyed at various festivals every year, and the locals speak in an Ulster-Scots vernacular honoured by a bronze sculpture called the Alphabet Angel. The village has for many years functioned as a gateway to the legendary Giant's Causeway, two miles away, where sweeping cliffs overlook a spectacular spread of basalt steps or columns leading to the sea. Bushmills is within a mile of another great attraction, Dunluce Castle, whose majestic ruins tower atmospherically over the coast on a rocky "island".
