Ballywalter is a small, quiet seaside village on the Ards Peninsula, looking out over the Irish Sea towards Scotland. Guests enjoy beautiful coastal scenery and a lovely, uncrowded, sandy beach - perfect for exploring rock pools, or for water sports. The harbour, with its adjacent picnic area, is a popular spot. Here, fishermen catch crabs and lobsters, and in summer, spreads of edible seaweed are laid out to dry. These are later bagged up and distributed round the country as dulce, a traditional delicacy. The harbour dates from the mid-1800s, and a lime kiln from the same period can be seen nearby. The remains of Ballywalter windmill, meanwhile, reflect an earlier time, in the 1700s, when the village produced corn and grain. The waters around this part of the coast have claimed the lives of many sailors and rescuers over the years. The treacherous Skulmartin Rock is marked with a red iron perch, and the bell from one of the ships that foundered there is displayed in Ballywalter's Presbyterian church. The village benefits from the wooded acres of Ballywalter Park, which contains a Victorian stately home. The house and gardens are open to visitors by appointment or on special occasions.
