Bangor has historically been a popular seaside destination - and a highly sought-after address. Today's Bangor is a modern town - still regenerating and still beautiful - with exciting facilities ranging from sailing to shopping: in 2007, this "quality maritime resort" was voted the most desirable place to live in Northern Ireland. Bangor Bay is lined with grand Victorian terraces and detached villas looking out over a sandy beach and a magnificent, award-winning marina. Near the marina is Pickie Family Fun Park, boasting a lake with swan pedalos, a playground, go-carting and a kiddies' train ride through the grounds. Situated on the south shore of Belfast Lough, near its opening into the Irish Sea, Bangor has something for everyone. History-lovers will appreciate the 17th Century tower and tower house, Bangor Abbey and Bangor Castle (which is actually a mansion) with its adjacent Heritage Centre. Sporty types may like to visit the leisure centre, take fishing trips or pleasure cruises, play a round of golf at the nearby Clandeboye course, or just simply walk. The North Down Coastal Path is glorious, the Castle Park Nature Trails suit young and old alike, and the 37-acre Ward Park is loved for its scenery and wildlife.
