The market town of Castlewellan enjoys wonderful surroundings in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Situated in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains, the town has a delightfully unusual character, having originally been designed by a French architect: there are two tree-lined town squares and a distinctively wide main street. A local heritage trail guides visitors easily around various historic buildings, while sporting activities range from golf to fishing and pony trekking, with designated cycle routes leading through the dramatic scenery of the Mournes and Slieve Croob. All of this would be enough to guarantee a memorable holiday, but the town also offers the huge attraction of Castlewellan Forest Park. This contains a 17th Century castle, a mile-long lake, beautiful formal and informal gardens, a sculpture trail and one of Europe's finest collections of trees and shrubs, with stunning walks through the woodlands. The park also houses the Peace Maze, the biggest permanent hedge maze in the world, leading to a peace bell in the centre. It was planted in 2000, in collaboration with local communities, to symbolise future harmony for Northern Ireland. Castlewellan Forest Park additionally hosts an annual agricultural show, an international music arts festival and sheepdog trials.
