Comber is a small, historic town, famous throughout County Down for its potatoes. Located at the north-western end of Strangford Lough, the town became a centre for linen production and grain processing in the 1700s. It subsequently established a whiskey distillery, which closed in 1953, although a rare bottle turns up every now and again with an equally eye-catching price. At the heart of Comber is the town square with its statue of local war hero Major General Robert "Rollo" Gillespie. Also born here was Thomas Andrews, who designed - and died with - the Titanic. Visitors to Comber enjoy the local pubs, restaurants, and a range of antique and decor shops. The privately owned Tudor Cinema, a lovely Art Deco recreation, is worth seeing, while its sister cinema, the Excelsior, is said to be one of the world's smallest. There are miles of rolling countryside to explore around Comber, as well as the sights of Strangford Lough, the Castle Espie Wetland Centre which boasts Ireland's biggest collection of ducks, geese and swans and, four miles away, Dundonald International Ice Bowl - a huge family entertainment complex. Comber is five miles from Newtownards and within easy reach of Belfast.
