The County Down settlement of Dromore is at once a small market town with around 5000 residents, and for historic reasons the seat of a cathedral, thought to have been established because St Colman had founded an abbey there near the River Lagan. Twice in its history Dromore has been the site of major conflict, in 1641 both town and cathedral destroyed during the rebellion of the Catholic gentry against the English administration; and in March 1689 it was the scene of a clash between the Jacobites and the supporters of William of Orange, the former party routing the latter. Dromore stands at the crossing point of the B2 route leading to Lurgan west and Ballynahinch east, and the A1 opening up Belfast to the north and Newry the south, and for this reason it is developing as a commuter town, Belfast for example depending on traffic only a drive of 30 minutes or so away. The town centre is focussed around its 18th century market square, where a set of stocks have been preserved, and the most notable building is as might be expected its Jacobean cathedral, near which there is a pretty bridge over the Lagan. Outside the town there is very open countryside, with only small settlements nearby and these few and far between.
