Kilkeel is a small town with a big reputation. Located on the south-east coast of County Down between the Mourne Mountains and the Irish Sea, Kilkeel was once the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Mourne - a term that's still sometimes coined today. There's some farming in and around this picturesque settlement, but its most important occupation is fishing. Kilkeel harbour, home to the largest fishing fleet in Northern Ireland, is always alive, colourfully, with boats and fishermen coming and going, loading and unloading, while seals swim hopefully around in search of a free meal. Overlooking all of this is the Nautilus Centre, where visitors may eat a freshly caught dinner, purchase something from the latest catch, or simply enjoy the heritage exhibition. There are many historic sights around here, from a number of ancient monuments to the 14th Century church and graveyard of St Colman's, and a local heritage trail guides visitors helpfully around the various attractions. Kilkeel offers all sorts of outdoor activities, from the obvious pleasures of the beach, fishing, sailing and water sports to golfing, walking, climbing, riding and even archery, although indoor types might prefer the comfort of the cinema, restaurants and bars.
