Moira is a large Georgian village in County Down and one of the most colourful in the country. Situated close to Lurgan and the M1, just a few miles west of Lisburn, Moira is famed for its riotous floral displays and has won many "in bloom" competitions, even reaching the European finals of the Entente Florale. Besides the vividly spectacular flowerbeds, shrubs, trees and hanging baskets that adorn the village and the old Rawdon Demesne, Moira has another big attraction up its sleeve - and that's sausages. The art of sausage-making is a local speciality, and visitors may buy the celebrated bangers to take home, or taste them served with champ - mash with spring onions and butter - at the village eateries before a wander round the antique shops and art gallery, or a stroll along the picturesque banks of the Lagan Canal. Moira's charm is compounded by courtyards, archways and historic buildings. From the 18th Century there survive black-stone houses, a parish church and a thatched yeoman's cottage. The railway station-house, dating from 1841, is the oldest station building in Northern Ireland. Finally, Moira holds a village festival every year, with the Annual National Countrysports Fair forming the centrepiece.
