Newry is a historic but lively, modern city set in stunningly beautiful surroundings. It's situated in the south-east of Northern Ireland and although it's officially part of Down, it straddles the border with Co Armagh. Newry lies in a valley between two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty - the magnificent Mourne Mountains to the east, and the spectacular Ring Of Gullion range to the south west. The Cooley Mountains rise to the south east. The city also enjoys a close proximity to water, being positioned at the end of the scenic Carlingford Lough and with two parallel waterways, the River Clanrye and a canal, running through the centre. Newry has a fascinating medieval past and some fine old buildings, which can be explored via the local Town Trail. It has flourished remarkably in these recent times of recession, with low unemployment, rising house prices, all kinds of commercial and administrative activity, arts centres, galleries and a museum, a busy nightlife in the restaurants and bars - and an amazing reputation for shopping, finding travellers flocking from the south of Ireland to the city's stores and malls. Visitors may also easily access outdoor sports, from golf, fishing and riding to sailing and mountaineering in the surrounding countryside.
