Burcot is a hamlet in Oxfordshire on the north banks of the River Thames, approximately 2 miles from Dorchester on Thames, 5 miles from Abingdon and 8 miles from Oxford. Burcot has one pub, The Chequers Inn on the Abingdon Road, a 16th century thatched inn on the riverside and in the shadow of the Wittenham Clumps. Burcot's position near the River Thames at one time gave it an importance out of all proportion to its size. During the first 30 years of the 17th century the Thames between Burcot and Oxford was virtually innavigable, and consequently goods destined for Oxford had to be unloaded at Burcot and then carried by road into the city. Burcot once had a Post Office and a shop close to The Chequers, but both have now gone. Nearby attractions include Dorchester Abbey, Newington House and the Didcot Railway Centre. The close-by market town of Abingdon was once the county town of Berkshire and the magnificent county hall and court house, now the museum, was supposedly designed by Christopher Wren. The site of Abingdon Abbey houses associated monastic buildings including the Abbey Exchequer, the timber-framed Long Gallery, a bakehouse, gateway, St John's pilgrims' hostel and the Church of Saint Nicolas.
