Wallingford sits on the River Thames, 15 miles from Oxford. It was an old walled Saxon ‘Burh’ town with the remains of the original town walls still visible today. Across the river is the village of Crowmarsh Gifford. The two are linked by Wallingford Bridge, a 900 ft long medieval stone bridge. Wallingford Castle was built by William the Conqueror and demolished by Oliver Cromwell in 1652. The remains can be seen from the Castle Gardens. The arcaded Town Hall was built in 1670 and displays the Town Plate. The centre of Wallingford is a typical old market town, with a large open town-square around the war memorial, flanked by numerous shops. There are some picturesque alleyways and a number of historic inns. Wallingford has three ancient churches including the church of St Mary-le-More and a modern Roman Catholic church. Other amenities include the Wallingford Museum, the Corn Exchange theatre, and the Cholsey and Wallingford steam railway. The annual BunkFest folk festival takes place at the end of August. A farmer’s market is held in the Market Place and in Feather’s Yard. Other events include Pooh Sticks Championships at Days Lock in March and the annual Blues and Beer Festival in early June.
