Borris is an enchanting village surrounded by beautiful scenery. It lies in the green valley of the River Barrow, overlooked to the east by the Blackstairs Mountains and Mount Leinster, their highest peak. A picture-postcard settlement, Borris has changed little since Georgian times: its stone buildings, inviting pubs and small shops, many with their original facades, are full of olde-worlde charm, and the former residence of the High Kings of Leinster - the stunning Borris House - is set in 650 acres of parkland, gardens and ancient woodlands, bounded on one side by the river. This vast estate, still inhabited by direct descendants of the royals, accommodates picturesque holiday cottages, game and coarse fishing, and a nine- hole golf course with sensational views over the countryside. Other sports enjoyed in the area include hang-gliding at Mount Leinster and long-distance walking along the scenic, designated routes of the Barrow riverside and the South Leinster Way. The age-old appeal of Borris is further enhanced by an imposing 16-arch viaduct dating from the mid-1800s, a hidden harbour, and living traditions including an annual fair, the yearly Rosdillig Steam Threshing And Vintage Rally, and exquisite local craftworks offered for sale at the workshops and mills.
