The pretty suburban village of Oranmore has been described as the gateway to the west of Ireland. Only a few miles from fun-loving Galway City and close to the airport, Oranmore is ideally situated for drivers wishing to explore the wider glories of the county and, indeed, the rest of Ireland, since it links easily to all the major roads. In its own right, Oranmore has much to recommend it, not least its beautiful location at the head of Galway Bay, on the Oranmore Bay inlet. The village is thriving, with new industries and stores moving into the area, and housing developments rising to accommodate the influx of workers. But still it retains great rural charm and a sense of history in such sights as the 15th Century Oranmore Castle, and a megalithic dolmen thought to date back to 2000 BC. Rinville Park is a popular destination, a wildlife haven with delightful pathways through woodland, farmland and coastal areas overlooking the bay. Golfers will enjoy superb scenery at the Galway Bay Golf Resort, whose championship course was designed by Christy O'Connor Jr. Other outdoor activities include horse-riding, fishing and sailing. Boat trips around Galway Bay are available at the marina.
