Beeston is a town in Nottinghamshire that is situated just four miles to the west of Nottingham City Centre. It is generally regarded as a suburb of Nottingham due to its proximity but it is actually part of the Borough of Broxtowe. Continuous urban development has meant that the built up area of Beeston has now spread right up to the villages of Chilwell and Wollaton. The Campus of the University of Nottingham brushes the eastern edge of Beeston; in fact some of the student self catering accommodation lies within the boundaries of Beeston. In Saxon times the area was known as Bestune. This is generally thought to be a derivation from the fact that the area was known for its rye grass, 'bes' meaning rye grass. Despite this a move in the nineteenth century was made to link the towns name to bees, explaining the bee on the town badge. This was consistent with the notion put about that the town was a 'hive of industry'. The Anglo-Scotian Mills is a crenelated listed building on Wollaton Road to the north of the town centre. It serves to remind us that of silk and lace mills once dominated the local skyline. The mill buildings have now been converted into apartments.
