Holme Pierrepont is a tiny hamlet just outside of Radcliffe-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire. It is in the Gamston ward of the Rushcliffe local authority. Its name is derived firstly (the holme part) from the Old English and Old Norse words meaning a small island or low lands by a river. The second part comes via the Pierrepont family who came over in 1066 with William the Conqueror and settled in Nottinghamshire in 1280. There is evidence of farming settlements in the area going back as far as the Neolithic age. Archaeologists have discovered remains from the Iron Age, Bronze Age and Roman Times. Holme Pierrepont Hall is described as Nottinghamshire's best kept secret. This beautiful brick house is only 15 minutes from Nottingham city centre. Built in 1550 by Sir William Pierrepont, it is the oldest brick house in the county. The Hall offers Wedding and Corporate facilities and is open to visitors. For the active and sporty, Holme Pierrepont has plenty to offer. It is the home of the National Watersports Centre, which is set in 270 acres of Country Park and boasts a 2,500m Regatta Lake, White Water Slalom Course and Water Skiing Lagoon. The centre offers white water rafting, kayaking and canoeing as well as placid water kayaking and canoeing.
