A picturesque town lying on the banks of the River Trent, Newark is a town steeped in history. The ruins of Newark Castle have had a huge influence on the unique character of the town.
Though the current remains were built in the early 12th century, there has been a castle on the site since 1068. A turbulent history left it in ruins, but the grounds were landscaped in 1887 - using the castle as a romantic backdrop. Now popular with visitors and residents alike, Newark Castle is often used as a stunning venue for concerts and festivals.
One of Nottinghamshire’s famous market towns, Newark holds a farmers market on the fourth Thursday of every month - in a market place watched over by the Georgian Town Hall. Over the years the town has become famous for its six annual antiques fairs, held at Newark County Showground, and thousands of antique hunters from across the world descend on the fair’s 4,000 stalls in search of a bargain. The showground also hosts agricultural shows, auto-jumble fairs and vintage tractor shows.
Other attractions in the town include the Newark Air Museum – home to 65 aircraft and cockpit sections from throughout the history of aviation. Exhibits range from transport, training and reconnaissance aircraft to helicopters, jet fighters and bombers. Newark Museum houses a fine archaeological collection, a civil war exhibition, while Millgate Museum features local trades and costume displays. Nearby North Clifton is also home to a relaxing meditation centre and Japanese garden. Population 25,000
