If you travel from Nottingham on the A614 towards the A1(M), you will pass through Rufford just before you reach Ollerton. Rather than pass through, however, perhaps you should consider tarrying for a while to see what Rufford has to offer. If you don't stop you will be missing the Rufford Abbey Country Park. The present day park once formed part of a Cistercian Abbey dating back to the 12th century. In 1536 the Dissolution of the Monasteries led to its slow transformation into a country estate. It was first owned by the Talbot family, including Elizabethan aristocrat George Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury. His wife, Bess of Hardwick, later built Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire. The remains of the Abbey now lie at the heart of the 150 acre Country Park, which is one of the most popular attractions in Nottingham. Health Walks are organised at the Country Park; these supervised walks are an ideal way to gently build up fitness after illness or as an alternative to more strenuous country hikes. If you like to combine your walking with a little Golf, try the nearby Rufford Park Golf and Country Club, set in the heart of historic Sherwood Forest.
