Chollerford is located at the crossing of the Military Road and Hadrian’s Wall, over the river Tyne and close to the remains of the important Roman Chester Fort. Chollerford Bridge is the first bridge on the North Tyne. It is a stone bridge built to replace the original medieval one, built in 1394 but later destroyed in the flood of 1771. The site is a Scheduled Monument and a Grade II Listed Building protected by law. The Military Road, the local name for the B6318, was built eight years after the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 to provide easier movement of troops between Carlisle and Newcastle, engineered by Robert Mylne. The Border Counties Railway ran alongside the east side of the river, with a station on the riverbank, which is now a private house. The old George Hotel stands on the west bank, where WH Auden and John Steinbeck have both stayed. The village of Chollerford has become a popular destination for tourists. The river offers opportunities for fishing and riverside walks and nearby are the historic Roman sites of Hexham, the Border Forest Park, Keilder Water, the Pennine Way, and in the distance, the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland National Park
