Born in Shanghai, China and educated at Cambridge. Known for his science fiction novels, these include The Drowned World (1962), The Drought (1965) and The Day of Creation (1985). ‘Fragmented novels’ include Crash (1973) which was adapted to film in 1996. The autobiographical novel Empire of the Sun (1984, filmed 1987) was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
