Kielder village, a small rural community, is located close to the Scottish border at the very top of Northumberland in the North Tyne Valley. It is best known for its sections of Hadrian’s Wall and for having the largest man-made lake in Europe. Although now situated at the head of the reservoir, the area was once wild and uncultivated, surrounded by moors and bogs, full of turbulence and history. The name Kielder comes from Kielder Burn meaning violent stream. Kielder village lay in a remote area with few inhabitants and suffered border raids and warfare for several centuries. In 1297, the army of William Wallace rampaged through it and in 1311 it is recorded that Robert the Bruce ‘laid waste to Kieldir’. Those living in the area built castles, pele towers or bastles as defence according to their means. Once popular for whisky distilling and running, it was the growth of mining industries during the eighteenth century that helped Kielder village grow. Tile works, lead mining and an iron foundry were in operation at Kielder at one time which helped improve roads and in 1862 the LNER railway opened a line into the area to speed coal delivery to the midlands. At 250 square miles in size, Kielder Forest is England’s largest forest, created in the 1920’s extending 6 miles either side of Deadwater Burn.
